Endorsements and Sponsors

Most people are familiar with the fact that professional athletes make enormous amounts of money. The minimum salary for an NBA player is 500,000 USD, which is about 10 times higher than the average salary for a normal worker. Many players in the league make a lot more than that with some players yearly salary topping 30 million dollars and a handful of others in the 20 million dollar range. As if their salaries weren’t high enough, most of these players receive money outside of their contracts from endorsement deals.

Lebron James is sponsored by many companies including Sprite, Nike, and Hubba Bubba. Lebron James’ salary last year was 33.3 million, but he received 52 million dollars through endorsements. His endorsements paid him almost 20 million dollars more than his salary and in 2015 he signed a deal with Nike worth over 1 billion dollars. Stephen Curry has a massive deal with Under Armour and he is also sponsored by Infiniti, while boasting a salary of 34.7 million, and his endorsements paid him 42 million (Statista, 2019).

Most fans want to embody the talent of their favourite players and will not hesitate to spend money on the latest sneakers or jerseys from them. These companies make huge profits off of the merchandise that these players wear and therefore it benefits them to have endorsements with them.

Superstar athletes are no different from celebrities and whenever someone is able to build a big following of fans companies will be sure to try and make a profit of their popularity. There is millions of dollars to be made being a professional athlete and a lot of it is behind the scenes and not part of their salary. Would anyone else like to trade bodies with Lebron James and sign a billion dollar deal with Nike, or is that just me?

The WNBA

Although the NBA gets most of the attention when it comes to the sport of basketball, the WNBA has a lot of talented female players. They may not have the big flashy dunks that are so exciting and popular during NBA games, they still have entertaining games that fans can watch.

The WNBA is growing in size with three teams having double digit growth in fans at games. Attendance was up 17.8 percent for the Los Angeles Sparks, 15.3 percent for the Connecticut Sun and 12.3 percent for the Minnesota Lynx. Despite the recent growth there is a lot of controversy about the salaries in the WNBA compared to the NBA (Lough,N. 2018).

The average WNBA salary is around 70, 000 USD with the veteran maximum contract being 113,500 USD. The NBA minimum is much, much higher than the WNBA maximum. Of course this is due to teams making more money because of more fans. Only about half the franchises in the WNBA are currently profitable although in the near future teams are expected to experience more growth as the sport gains popularity.

The WNBA is also looking at different ways to grow their revenues. They have started allowing companies to post logos on their jerseys which leads to more revenue from these companies. They have also run a few LGBTQ campaigns to try and reach this target market. The LGBTQ community represents a market segment of about 830 million dollars. Both ideas have proven to be successful. 25 percent of the WNBA’s fans have identified as lesbian. In my opinion the WNBA will not have the same appeal to me as watching the NBA but it is a solid option for many people to watch when they want to see some good basketball action.

Is the Euro-league an Option?

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world, and it is gaining popularity rapidly. One of the biggest markets for basketball is the European league. Many clubs have seen their revenue double or even triple in the past couple years, due to more fans and better television contracts (Barkas, A. 2017).

The European leagues offers players who may not be good enough to play in the NBA an opportunity to make a living playing basketball. The average salary is around $60,000 USD to $100,000 USD, but the best players can make upwards of a million dollars per year.

Although these salaries are nowhere close to what players in the NBA make, it is a good alternative to the NBA G League where salaries range from around $25,000 USD to $40,000 USD. Ticket sales continue to grow year over year with certain clubs seeing increases of over 15% which should eventually lead to players getting pay increases. European players having success in the NBA is also good advertising for the talent that they are developing out there.

Kristaps Porzingis, Luka Doncic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are all young developing superstars from Europe. The fact that players like this can come from Europe and make such a big impact on the NBA is very impressive and inspiring for young basketball players all over the world. The NBA has seen substantial growth in recent years allowing top players to make insane amounts of money, certain players have signed deals worth over 200 million dollars.

Perhaps eventually basketball in Europe will be similar to soccer where players from all over the world will move to that market in hopes of chasing their dreams and playing basketball for a living.

Anthony Davis – Is It Worth It?

On February 7th, 2019, New Orleans Pelican’s franchise player Anthony Davis shook the basketball world when his agent announced that his client requested a trade and will not re-sign with the Pelican’s should the team not trade him when his contract ends in 2021 (Zillgitt,J 2019. USA today).

As of recently, the Pelican’s refused to play Anthony Davis in regular season games which not only hurts Davis’ trade value, but also the team’s record and sales for the organization. Now for the real question, is it worth it?

NEW ORLEANS, LA – FEBRUARY 19: Anthony Davis #23 of the New Orleans Pelicans celebrates with the 2017 NBA All-Star Game MVP trophy after the 2017 NBA All-Star Game at Smoothie King Center on February 19, 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Pelican’s have a top 3 center in the league, boasting 27.8 PPG, 12.8 RPG and 4.2 APG while having a 50.8 FG% respectively (Basketball Reference, 2019). Choosing to bench and 6x All-star will surely plummet Davis’ trade value and affect how much he can make when a new team decides to pick him up, but just how will it affect the Pelicans?

Not only are the Pelicans risking a playoff berth by benching Davis, they also lose ticket sales, Television broadcasting, advertisement, jersey and merchandising sales not just related to Anthony Davis, but also the organization.

The fans are the consumers who spend their money on tickets to see Davis, buy his jersey, see him play and support him throughout his career. It would be foolish to go against the grain or choose to not ride that wave because not only does it help the Pelican’s overall revenue, but eventually the Pelican’s will be able to trade Anthony Davis for better assets instead of just letting him walk away.

Let us know in the comments below if you would bench Anthony Davis in spite and let his value sink, or would you play and trade him?

Is College Basketball flawed?

A lot of chatter has gone around other sports news outlets about Duke University’s rising star and potential first-round pick in the 2019 NBA draft, Zion Williamson. With Zion’s 285 lbs frame and measuring at 6’7, some believe Zion is the second coming of Lebron James (ESPN, 2019).

On February 20th, 2019 Duke University was scheduled to play against the University of North Carolina. Within the first minute of the game, Zion Williamson fell because his shoe ripped from underneath himself on a move to the basket.

The Duke vs. UNC game alone was reselling for $3296/seat on SeatGeek.com. (Schad, T., 2019). Reason being that ticket sales are so high is because not only are both teams top seeds and projected guaranteed top-16 in the March-Madness tournament to come, but everybody came to see one person including President Barack Obama. His name is Zion Williamson.

Now if 5000 tickets were sold, that’s 19.6 million in just ticket revenue from this one game. Not to mention all the other television contracts to broadcast the game nation-wide. How much of that money goes to it’s players? The ones who risk their bodies for honour, glory and the right to call themselves champions. Nothing. In College basketball, players are not allowed to accept endorsement deals, have agents, make money off their own name, not even get a free meal from their respective school.

In 2017, the NCAA made over 1 billion in annual revenue for the first time and definitely wont be the last time. Let us know how you feel in the comment section below on how you feel about a corporation making over 1 billion in annual revenue without having to pay its players or letting them make any type of income from basketball.
